Behind the scenes

3 events in one special year!

2014 was the 50th anniversary of 'the boys' coming to America, so we knew we needed to make it a spectacular celebration. I thought, "why not go for The Beach Boys?" When the call came that we got them, it was the most over the moon feeling I ever had as a concert promoter. So with them, Ambrosia, John Sebastian, and Laurence Juber, 2014 was our benchmark year.

We did three major events that year: February ‘64, where we re-created the entire Ed Sullivan show act for act, note for note, before a live audience in the Bomhard Theater at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. And then, when Paul came to Louisville in the fall, we did another four-day festival called To Sir with Love, which also included a huge concert at Fourth Street Live.

Sadly, 2014 ended horribly because we lost our beloved Rachel Blanton, an unexpected loss that we all still feel. Rachel was a big part of our evolution from just a plain old tribute festival to something much more special. When we booked the Orchestra (ELO), and I told her (just weeks before she passed), she couldn't believe that she would be playing Jeff Lynne's music with them. She was so excited.

During that unbelievable show, the string section that she created – now led by her sister- in-law, Anna Blanton – played every song with her in mind, and her spirit was very present.
