Ep 12: Something About Love and the Beatles with the Newbees

In our latest episode of Something Will Happen, Melissa is joined by Jeff and Misty, founders of The Newbees. Jeff and Misty met in the audio engineering program in college. Jeff, as a student teacher, worked to help Misty gain her footing in her first few classes of the program. While working together they hit it off and their love of music, the Beatles, and each other has led them all the way to where they are now as one of our favorites here at Abbey Road on the River.

Melissa asks about the early days of the Newbees. They started as an original band, played covers, and then went on what Jeff called a “Beatles sabbatical”. Jeff and Misty credit their success as an original band to their time studying the music of the Beatles. Jeff especially mentions how the work of George Martin’s production of the Beatles’ music has had a great effect on his own musicality.

Jeff and Misty tell the serendipitous tale of how they came to learn of AROTR and become a part of the festival. On a trip to Liverpool, the man running the tour they were on spotted Jeff’s Kentucky ID. He asked if they had ever been to AROTR (turns out they had never heard of us!). After the trip, they reached out to the festival. Because of a cancellation, with only a ten day notice, producer Gary Jacob called and offered them a spot. After their successful performance, they ran into the man from Liverpool at the festival and were able to thank him for the tip!

They also talk about their experience with the Love Show at AROTR. They tease us with some insights about the Love 2.0 Show in May including two drum sets, a sitar, and more theatricality throughout. The thing that really stands out about the Love Show, they tell us, is how although AROTR is full of different individual bands, when it comes down to it, we are all a part of one big AROTR family.

They tell us about their pandemic project, Band in a Van. It is a multi episode docu-series that features traveling, interviews, and music. To learn more about this creative series check out their website or find it on youtube. Also check out their three new original albums!
