Bonus Episode 1: Happy Birthday George with John Auker
In our very special Bonus Episode, Melissa talks to John Auker of Hard Day’s Night. John is the George of the band and has much to say about him for the special birthday episode.
John starts off by telling his story of how he discovered the Beatles and came to love their music. He and Melissa discuss the differences between uncovering the music at one’s own pace vs listening to the Beatles in order as it was happening. It is interesting how technology and access can create a totally different experience for everyone in their Beatles journey.
John talks about his musical history, studying Jazz in college and working on big band musical arrangements and how that experience helps him in Hard Day’s Night. He also mentions how playing with bands helped to expand his musical knowledge as members teach each other and all bring something different to the group.
While discussing the instruments John plays, he tells Melissa in depth about the decision and process of learning the sitar. They discuss at length the challenges of the instrument and reflect on how one can listen to the growth of George Harrison and his journey with the instrument and culture within the music of the Beatles. They finish up their conversation by discussing George and his development as a musician throughout the time the Beatles were together. There is no question, George is one of the greats.
