Ep 9: Something About George Harrison with Peter Conrad
In our episode this week, we are celebrating George Harrison’s birthday by speaking with Peter Conrad. Peter is one of the few performers who has been with Abbey Road on the River since the beginning!
Peter talks about how the death of George Harrison deeply affected him. Moved by the passing, he recorded “Goodbye George”, which he later sent to AROTR’s Gary Jacob as entry for a contest. Instead, Gary booked him to perform at the inaugural festival of AROTR in 2002. At that festival, Peter sang “Goodbye George” as the opening song of an act with multiple performers in honor of George Harrison.
Peter also recounts with Melissa fond memories he holds of the many performances he has had over his career. He reflects on the serendipitous nature of how four young men in a rock band in the 60s made it possible for Peter to travel the world and meet so many amazing people.
Peter takes Melissa through the timeline of George’s career. They discuss how George credits that his musical influences began in the womb. They talk of the evolution of George’s songwriting and how it was affected by his spirituality.
Peter tells us that his plans for the upcoming festival this May will be a celebration of his own anniversary along with ours. He will be celebrating 20 years performing at AROTR! His performance will include callbacks to songs from his past AROTR shows. The show will be a mix of songs and stories from Peter.
