Ep 5: Something About a Rooftop Concert with Hard Day's Night
In the latest episode of Something Will Happen, Melissa catches up with two members of the tribute band Hard Day’s Night, Frank and Mike Muratore. Frank and Mike are father and son who perform as Paul McCartney and John Lennon in the “suits and boots” authentic tribute act that is Hard Day’s Night.
The conversation begins with Frank and Mike discussing the variety of pros and cons that come along with performing as an authentic look/sound-alike tribute band. They touch on the work that they put in to remain faithful to the style of the Beatles. They comment on how creative freedom to push the envelope must sometimes be sacrificed to remain true to the Beatles and their sound.
While discussing their commitment to authenticity, they talk of all of the different guitars and instruments they travel with to cover the wide variety set by the Beatles. Mike also recounts the impressive story of how Frank transitioned his bass playing from right-handed to left-handed after being challenged by an audience member.
Melissa asks about the band’s recreation of the iconic rooftop concert. We learn that the idea was formed after they began challenging themselves to center the 50th anniversary of notable Beatles history. All three recount the Hard Day’s Night rooftop performance on the roof of the Walcott apartments directly across from the festival. They talk of how great it felt to be performing after the uncertainty brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. We can all agree it feels great to be back safely.
They discuss how the band met AROTR producer Gary Jacob and became involved with the festival from the beginning in 2002. In remembering their many years with the festival, Mike discusses how seemingly every time Hard Day’s Night plays songs from the Revolver album it rains at the festival. Not to be too superstitious, but it might be best for the band to stick to Rubber Soul this time around. We can’t wait!
