Ep 6: Something About the Beatles Music Legacy with Valice

In our latest episode of Something Will Happen, Melissa talks to Ricci Valice of the band Valice. The group made it’s Abbey Road on the River debut at the 2021 AROTR event in September. Valice originated back in 2018 in Austin, Texas. They have been playing, touring, and working on new original music.

Ricci tells how his interest in music began from an early age. He recalls his dad playing the Beatles around him when he was younger. He inherited some of his musicality from his parents, both of whom play instruments. He tells stories of learning to play instruments and spending his time in middle school carrying a large notebook where he wrote his music.

Melissa and Ricci then discuss how Valice came to be involved with AROTR. He heard about the festival from a friend that attends every year, so he reached out to AROTR on Instagram and was invited to come play! (This just goes to show the power of putting yourself out there and asking for what you want) He expressed how much fun it was to play an all Beatles set in contrast to the original music that they normally play. Ricci tells of the work the band put in to study the songs and how playing the Beatles sharpened the band with their performance.

Next, we hear about the exciting experience of being on stage with Paul McCartney. At a  Paul McCartney concert in Chicago, Ricci and a friend brought a sign with a pun based on the song “Queenie Eye”. The sign declared that they “have the balls” to sing a song with Paul. The challenge was accepted and they were invited onto the stage and sang “Get Back” with the man himself.

Rounding out the interview, Melissa and Ricci discuss the ongoing legacy of the Beatles. They talk of how younger bands, like Valice and others are carrying on the torch of preserving the timeless music of our beloved Beatles. Ricci mentions the relevancy of their music today and the way that they have influenced music, fashion, and more.

Ricci also teases us with plans for the upcoming AROTR show in May. Valice is planning on performing a Paul only tribute in honor of Paul McCartney’s 80th birthday this year and also a show around the “Revolver” album.
