Ep 14: Something About Beatles Fashion with Payton Dale

This week Melissa is joined by Payton Dale. Payton is a fashion stylist who works styling musicians. She has been heavily influenced by the fashion of the Beatles and gives a new perspective to the conversation around what makes the Beatles so special.

Payton discusses the influence German photographer, Astrid Kirchherr had on the Beatles and creating their style. She attributes the famous haircuts we all know and love to advise from Astrid. She talks of the strategy involved in the styling of the Beatles. Payton mentions how between stylists, managers, and their girlfriends, the Beatles always had someone influencing what they wore and how they presented themselves.

Melissa is intrigued to hear Payton talk about how the many fashion boutiques and shops in London inspired the Beatles to open their own Apple Boutique. Apparently, the curious thing about the clothes wasn’t the clothes at all, but the intricately stitched, satin tags that came on the items. Payton tells us how it is more likely for one of the clothing tags to survive than the item it was on.

Payton also shares with us the interesting story of how she got into John Lennon’s pants! Working at a venue, one of the performers brought his suit to her to get ready for his set. Upon further inspection, she realized that the suit was in fact John Lennon’s suit from the filming of Hard Day’s Night! The performer had received it as a birthday present. She was allowed to try it on, take pictures of the stitching, and fangirl over John’s suit. . . We’re totally not jealous at all!

Payton discusses with Melissa the evolution of her own personal style and confidence through discovering the Beatles. She was able to find a community of like minded peers online who supported her in her creative projects. Fueled by their support and a new haircut, she dived into building her own personal style paying homage to the vintage styles of the Beatles era.
