Ep 7: Beatles History with Joe Johnson
In this episode of Something Will Happen Melissa talks to Joe Johnson of the Beatle Brunch radio show. Joe Johnson is a nationally recognized voiceover talent and for 30-plus years, a major-market radio personality in South Florida. You have probably seen him as an MC at Abbey Road on the River and the Flower Power Cruise.
In this podcast Joe recounts how he started Beatle Brunch back in 1992. Joe explains how he likes to use themes to organize the show, for example: a show around Beatles songs with one-word titles. He tells Melissa how he loves the show because it gives him a chance to dive deeper into Beatles topics, history, and interviews.
He goes over his long career from being the “traffic guy” to making song parodies to Beatle Brunch to now working at NPR. We learn that it actually all started with Joe winning a radio prize! He tells of his times meeting and watching Tommy James and the Shondells.-- If you are excited about Tommy James at this year’s AROTR like we are, listen up for Melissa who goes over the ticket packages we are offering and how you can get 15% off!--
Joe’s knowledge of Beatles history allows him and Melissa to talk all about the Beatles coming to America in 1964. They go over how the Beatles relate to cultural subjects at the time like the assassination of JFK, the civil rights movement, and more. They discuss at length the period of time the Beatles spent in Miami during their first visit and performance on the Ed Sullivan show.
They muse, as so many do, on what it was that made the Beatles so special and why they have endured the test of time. Melissa points to their authenticity and personality, while Joe speaks of their creativity and the respect they had for their fans.
